Spendedge Insights: The Growing Need to Transition from Traditional Plastics to Sustainable Packaging
Sustainable CPG packaging focuses on the strategic and innovative design, development, and use of packaging solutions that reduce environmental impact while addressing sustainability challenges. It balances the need for resource conservation, waste reduction, and carbon emission mitigation with the requirement to maintain product integrity, provide information, and enhance consumer convenience. Three primary approaches to sustainable packaging include recyclable packaging, which uses materials like glass, steel, aluminum, cardboard, paper, and certain plastics that can be reclaimed and reused to improve supply chain efficiency; flexible packaging, which employs non-rigid materials like paper and plastic for better efficiency and transparency than traditional rigid packaging; and biodegradable packaging, which is made from materials that naturally decompose, supporting sustainability and helping to address the rising costs of waste management. These approaches work together to align packaging strategies with both environmental and societal needs.
